areas are required by law to only spray specific types of paint and use expensive equipment to filter what gets pumped into the atmosphere.What Can Go Wrong Before you jump in with both feet, you need to know a few important facts about painting and body work and what can go wrong.There are some common misconceptions and mistakes that paint books and magazine articles dont stress enough.Paint and primer are not scratch filler, so if you can feel or see defects or scratches with the naked eye, they will be ten times as visible once the paint is on the car.If a panel is slightly bent or your body filler is not sculpted just right, it will stand out like a sore thumb.This also includes crazed or excessively cracked paint.Crazed paint is caused by paint being too thick or paint going over a coat that had not fully cured or adhered to the panel.If your paint is crazed, you cant put enough paint on it to hide it.If your old paint is crazed, you must remove the paint all the way down to the metal and start over.If you fill over the cracks with a specialized filling primer and it comes out as smooth as glass, those cracks will be back in about a month.If you have any defects in paint that arent bugs or dirt, youve got to take the paint down to the metal and start over or they will be back.You cant just sand down rust a little and then primer and paint over the top of it because it does not eliminate the underlying rust problem.Improper rust repair returns with a vengeance.Body filler and paint shrinks over time.You can fill a dent and have the filler perfectly sculpted and paint over it.After a few weeks or months go by, youd be surprised at how bad the panel can look.The quality of the products used and their proper application cuts down on the shrinkage, but its an important issue to consider.You need to perform as much work to the metal and use as little filler as possible to keep the shrinkage to a minimum.Less filler means less shrinkage.Dont use WD 4.Oils can become trapped in fillers and wreak havoc on paint.If you see fisheyes or any other chemically caused defects show up in a small section when spraying your paint, you cant add enough paint to cover them.If its a small area, finish painting the car and repair that area later.If its a large area and you just started painting, you should simply stop and thoroughly clean off the wet paint with solvent and a rag, but make sure you dont disturb the work under the paint.Once the paint is removed, use solvent to wash the surface again, and remove the culprit causing the problem.Ive heard of this happening a few times on the same area with stubborn silicone spray contamination, where more intense sol vents were used each time until one finally worked right.The next step would have been stripping to start with a clean slate.This makes a mess, but saves you a lot of sanding.Compressed air is used to transfer the primer and paint to the surface of the car.When the air shoots out of the tip of the gun, it stirs up any loose debris it comes in contact with, so going over the surface of your project with an air nozzle is very important.Keep in mind that any loose tape or masking paper
